
American, British and French naval forces are carrying out joint anti-mine exercises off the Bahraini coast.
Bahrain is home to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet and also hosts a permanent British military base.
Justifying the latest drills in the Persian Gulf, the Fifth Fleet said that the three states “are dedicated to conducting tactical training to counter the risk of mines”.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the U.S. Navy told AFP that the exercise is “purely defensive”.
‘The Persian Gulf and the highly strategic Strait of Hormuz witnessed a spike in tensions last year after the Americans came into close contact with Iranian vessels in the area.
