ROPAR: Ropar police managed to trace the cab driver hired by the unidentified accused conman to reach the house of CRPF martyr’s family in Rauli village in Nurpurbedi district. However, the police are still groping in the dark despite interrogating the driver for hours.
Darshan Singh and his wife Amarjeet Kaur, septuagenarian parents of Pulwama attack CRPF martyr Kulwinder Singh, were duped of Rs 1.5 lakh on Thursday by the accused who lured them with a promise of getting a gas agency allocated to them. The conman was dressed in CRPF uniform and presented himself as a senior colleague of Kulwinder Singh.
The car driver had told the police that he had demanded Rs 1,200 from the conman, who had paid him only Rs 1,000 after getting out of the car. The police also checked CCTV footages at the railway station, but failed to get any clue.
“We have questioned the cab driver, but he seems innocent. He was paid the fare by the accused and was asked to return. The accused had rode a bike of martyr’s father to the bank. The accused himself drove the bike while the father and the mother were riding pillion. “It stunned us that the accused managed to win the confidence of the family so soon,” said Nurpurbedi station house officer investigating the case.
The police said that photograph of the accused has been sent to all police stations and to the WhatsApp groups of the police teams. The police are also keeping a tab on public places, including bus stands and railway stations.
“We have checked the CCTV footages of the railway station to know whether the accused had boarded any train. We have also checked all CCTV footage of cameras installed within Nurpurbedi and Ropar, but we are unable to get any clues yet. On Saturday, we recovered the bike of the family that the conman had taken along with him. The accused did not use his own phone, he used the phone of the father. We are looking into the call details of the phone,” added the investigating officer.
The family members claimed that the accused ingratiated himself by claiming to share their grief over the death of Kulwinder Singh.
