Tehran Sees US Military Warships as Provocation, Denies Oman’s Mediation

Tehran responded on Wednesday to the US Secretary of State’s statements about deterring Iranian threats in the region and described sending warships as a “provocation.”The government added that the surprise visit of Omani Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi to Tehran on Monday and his consultations with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif were not about a mediation. In a Twitter message addressed to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, an adviser to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the US military deployment to the region was a deliberate provocation.

“You @SecPompeo do not bring warships to our region and call it deterrence. That’s called provocation. It compels Iran to illustrate its own deterrence, which you call provocation. You see the cycle?” the adviser, Hesameddin Ashena, tweeted in English, as reported by Reuters.

Major General Gholamali Rashid said, according to Fars news agency, said that the United States “will not dare” to attack Iran because of its “resistance spirit.”

“If the criminal America and its Western and regional allies don’t dare carry out a face-to-face military attack against our country it is because of the spirit of resistance and sacrifice of the people and youth,” Rashid was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Mahmoud Waezi, director of the office of the Iranian president, said on the sidelines of a government meeting on Wednesday that the Omani foreign minister held talks with Zarif that were not related to mediation, according to Iranian news agencies.

Bin Alawi’s visit to Tehran came days after a telephone call by Pompeo to Oman’s Sultan Qaboos bin Said. According to the State Department, the two sides discussed “threats to the Gulf region by Iran,” as well as developments in Yemen.
