Majority of American Voters Oppose US Pressure Campaign Against Iran, Military Action

TEHRAN (FNA)- A new opinion poll shows that majority of American voters disapproved of the way the United States was handling relations with Iran, opposing a military conflict with the Islamic Republic, as Washington’s fuzzy and high-drama maximum pressure approach to Tehran has totally failed in achieving any success.

The Harvard CAPS/Harris poll, released to The Hill newspaper on Tuesday, found that fifty-five percent of voters stated they disapproved of the way Washington was handling relations with Tehran.

Also, a vast majority of voters oppose a military conflict with Iran and express support for US President Donald Trump’s retreat from his alleged decision for a military strike against the Islamic Republic.

The survey showed that fifty-seven percent of respondents were against military confrontation with Iran if the US were not directly attacked by the country, while only thirty-eight percent said they would support another US military entanglement in the region.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran hit a new high in June after the US sent a number of military aircarft to the Iranian skies under a tense climate of escalating threats, forcing the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force to shoot down one of the intruding American aircraft.

Hours after the incident, the US president claimed that he had ordered a strike on Iran, but called it off 10 minutes before the raid.

A poll released late June also showed that fewer than a quarter of American voters want the United States to go to war with Iran. The Hill-HarrisX survey indicated that just 19% of respondents want Trump to launch strikes against Iran, while just 5% want a formal declaration of war. In all, 58% of those who participated in the poll stated that they want Washington to adopt a non-military response to Tehran’s downing of an American surveillance drone.

Tensions around Iran have been rising since Trump torpedoed the landmark 2015 nuclear deal and re-imposed sweeping sanctions targeting large swathes of Iran’s economy. Recently, Washington raised the stakes in the standoff, sending additional military assets – including a carrier strike group, a bomber task force, and Patriot missiles – to countries bordering Iran.
