Japanese naval shipbuilders linked with partnership move

Japan’s Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding company (Mitsui E&S) is reportedly looking to form a business partnership with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in a move to amalgamate two of the country’s biggest naval shipyards.

The Nikkei business newspaper reported on 12 November that a bid to form the potential partnership, which would enable the two companies to launch joint bids for defence contracts, is being considered by Mitsui E&S in light of growing economic challenges facing the company.

A spokesperson from Mitsui E&S told Jane’s that while the firm has not yet reached any conclusions about an alliance with MHI, it is seeking to expand naval shipbuilding collaboration activity with Japanese shipyards.
