Protestors had been demonstrating at Chennai’s Washermenpet on Thursday. Trouble started when police nabbed a group of protestors when they refused to disperse. Others gathered at the spot and demanded police release the detainees. They raised slogans and pelted stones at the police. A stampede occurred when protestors saw police forcing evacuations. The police also diverted vehicles and blocked flyovers.
