Spying, hacking and intimidation: Israel’s nine-year ‘war’ on the ICC exposed
Comprehensive investigation into Israel’s covert operations against the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the past nine years have been revealed.
The investigation shows how Israel, driven by concerns over potential war crimes prosecutions related to its actions in Palestine, employed various tactics including hacking, spying, and intimidation to undermine the ICC’s work.
Starting in 2015, when Palestine joined the ICC, Israel’s intelligence agencies, including Mossad and Shin Bet, began extensive surveillance on ICC officials and Palestinian human rights groups. They monitored communications, hacked emails, and even threatened ICC staff to dissuade them from pursuing investigations into alleged Israeli war crimes.
Further details are the personal threats made to Fatou Bensouda, the ICC’s former chief prosecutor, including threats against her family. Despite these efforts, the ICC continued its investigations, with the current chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, announcing plans to seek arrest warrants for senior Israeli officials.
