Military officers under Security and Defence Studies Program
(SDSP) from South Africa have visited Oliver Tambo Leadership School at
Kaweweta in Nakaseke District where 14 former African National Congress
(ANC) trainees were buried after dying of natural causes in 1990s.
Uganda
People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) on Tuesday said the officers paid a
visit to the fallen ANC freedom fighters also known as Umkonto we Sizwe.
The
soldiers were received by the Commandant of Oliver Tambo Military
Training School in Kaweweta, Col Chris Ogumelaki who applauded the
government of South Africa for selecting Uganda as a study destination.
“The
Uganda-South Africa relationship has existed for a long time and
therefore should be sustained,” he added, according to a statement
issued by UPDF.
Kaweweta was established in 1989 to house the ANC fighters who were planning to fight the South African apartheid regime.
“Oliver Tambo School of leadership was established as a reminder to all Pan Africanists not to forget the past heroes who fought the many liberation struggles in Africa,” the statement added.
Earlier, the same delegation held a meeting with the Chief of Defence Forces Gen David Muhoozi at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs Headquarters in Mbuya.
