APEC: Seeking Relevance in a Changed World

APEC has undergone a significant evolution since its founding more than three decades ago, but given its original commitment to open regionalism and co-operation among countries of diverse levels of economic development, it now faces perhaps its greatest challenge as the Trump administration upends the global trade order.

Despite this, it’s also clear that the history of APEC as a forum without enforceable commitments or other mechanisms to realize its vision has long dogged the group. Still, there is a way for APEC to maintain its relevance, writes Vinod K. Aggarwal.
